KURA Japanese restaurant

Slide the old temple door on Queen Street and descend down to Kura Japanese restaurant. The building Kura is in used to be an old grain silo when there was a stream running through Queen St., hence the name Kura”, which means warehouse in Japanese. Adorning the old stone wall that is a legacy from Auckland‘s colonial days, are gorgeous Japanese silk wedding kimonos, also dotted around are Japanese antiques, all of which are for sale. During winter there is an open fi re.

Kura is modern fusion style Japanese cuisine and does classics with a distinctive Kura” touch that blends outside infl uences and yet still keeps them essential Japanese.

There is also an ever changing daily specials menu which refl ects the seasonal changes and what is fresh from the fi sh markets that day. Highly recommended is our beautifully presented fresh sashimi platters, visually stunning “Bridge” or “Spider” sushi rolls and the deep fried soft shell crab is a must! Kura is a favourite for a romantic date but also caters for larger groups with it’s sunken large tables. Bookings are essential.

Conveniently located near the Town Hall and live arts area of the city and the Aotea car park is behind Kura for ease of parking.

    We just had dinner at Kura – a large party and everything went well until they overcharged us by $200 dollars. The manager claimed to have given us the wrong bill but as it had all the items we really did order as well as numerous meals and drinks which we didn’t, i found this to be a strange excuse. The manager said their policy when having overcharged was to apologise which was all they did. My advice is to check your bill very carefully if you ever dine here.

    Went to Kura for the first time last Wednesday.

    My friend and I arrived at opening time (5:30) without making a reservation. We sat at the counter (right on the corner is the best spot by the way; most room) as all the tables had already been reserved! I found this a little hard to believe for a weeknight, but sure enough, the place soon filled up, counter and all! I guess Kura is pretty popular with the locals.

    The staff were friendly and polite, suitable attentive without being pushy. Top marks.
    The food was also reasonably priced, and the serving sizes of what we ordered were more than satisfactory.
    We ordered the bridge roll (which looked interesting and also tasted good), the cheese and shrip deep-friend spring rolls, the beef-tongue steak (which was OK; I was expecting thinly sliced tongue but this was thick and soft), and the chicken karaage.

    There were also a good selection of beers, with Asahi and Sapporo on tap (more of a Kirin man myself, but if it comes down to bottle or tap, tap’s gonna win on a hot day)

    The fireplace would be really nice in winter time. Sounds like a good excuse to go again.

    All in all, a solid performance from Kura.
