Soi Japanese Cuisine

Soi is the new kid on the block in Remuera. However, the owner/chef, Mr Toru, is an old hand, having honed his skills at a variety of Japanese restaurants over the past ten years. With its bamboo-screened entrance , its intimate interior and its attentive staff, Soi cannot fail to please even the discerning cognoscenti of Auckland’s very own Hampstead. Soi’s udon noodles and tofu are handmade on the premises, and Mr Toru has his own special suppliers for the seafood dish and the Angus sirloin used for the beef tataki. Japanese people are notoriously fussy about their tofu. Substandard tofu can be lumpy and bitter to taste; not so Soi’s tofu, which is silky smooth and melts on the palate. Try the Saikyo-yaki snapper grilled with a Kyoto-style miso sauce for a treat. The restaurant is child-friendly with its great $15 kids’ menu, containing a sampling of all tastes. Please note that families who visit between 5:30-7:30pm will receive 10% off their bill. Soi provides a popular takeaway version of their menu. Soi’s well-stocked counter bar has French and New Zealand wines, as well as sake, and real espresso lovers can get their ‘fix’ well into the night. Keep an eye on the today’s special which are always a treat ( market price).

We were very excited to try Soi for dinner, but ended up disappointed. We were given two children’s menus and assumed when we ordered the terriyaki chicken for our 5 and 7 year old that it would be off the kid’s menu– already quite expensive at $15 per dish. So, when the bill came imagine our surprise– our children each received chicken terriyaki off the regular menu at $23 each! When I pointed this out to the server, thinking it must be a mistake, she just smiled and said she thought we were not ordering off the children’s menu. She did not offer to charge us less, which would have been the appropriate response. We will not be back.

This Japanese restaurant caters for the taste of those not looking for authentic Japanese cuisine. Basically we had a group of 4. The Miso Katsu pork cutlet was hard to chew and chewy. The Otoro tuna sashimi we had wasnt the real thing that melts in the mouth. Again stringy and chewy.
The appetizers such as fried calamari was tiny portion, consisting of 15 small tentacles in 6 pieces which cost $8
The atmosphere is good, but service was really average. Probably wont go back to the place again – there are better ones out there which has more authentic Japanese menu like Nikishi in Botany or Katsura in city. I think this restaurants menu has been westernized to cater for those living in Remuera

About Japanese Restaurant Guide

We admire the effort and the confidence of the Japanese restaurants here in New Zealand. We also look forward to the new styles of food and the creations they will come up with as they continue to progress individually, and as they blend these elements with New Zealand cooking culture.
